Today was a rough morning at the office – we’re out of coffee. The horror! I hope this never happens to you, I’m thinking of starting a support group.
But I digress…
I can’t work without my AM java fix, yes I’m weak. So I hoofed it over to Barriques on West Washington for a “Punch in the Face” (literally – it’s my favorite coffee blend) and some beanage and noticed they’ve kicked off a foursquare promotion today. Sweet!
According to the official Barriques website:
Don’t miss out on great Foursquare specials at your favorite Barriques location. Make sure to ‘check in’ every time you visit to be eligible for discounts and freebies.
At this time I’m not sure what these discounts and freebies are, but you can bet your bottom dollar (don’t bet your bottom that’d just be silly) that they involve free coffee or tea, and who doesn’t like that?
Here’s a local business that gets it – so let’s help them be successful in its endeavor today. If you’re looking for coffee, head to Barriques and check in on foursquare – you never know, you might get a free cup o’ Java! Tweet about them today too – they can use the support of our club! (You’ll find them @barriques) Of course I’m hoping we can get them to host a Social Media Club of Madison Tweet-up social in the near future, it’d be the perfect spot for us connected types.
As for me, I’m proud to say Barriques gave me the kick in the petutie I needed to make the switch from Gowalla to foursquare. No looking back! This just goes to prove that geolocation isn’t just for New York City and L.A., it’s everywhere you want to be…and should be.
Now stop reading already, go get some coffee and check in!

In our efforts to check in with Four Square or Gowalla or Loopt, lets not forget the contributions of the mobile workers. As a virtual and mobile worker, I visit a lot of coffee shops, libraries, hotel lobbies and even Monona Terrace to work in peace with access to WIFI or just a good view since I have Broadband card.
I have visited every Barriques in Madison added to about 10 others. I think all coffee shops should recognize the role people like me play to bring new visitors to their establishments. Heck, I have had 4 meetings in one location, with coffee, breakfast, lunch and afternoon snack with various clients. So can you come up with a mobile worker coupon that recognizes that I bring others to your java feed? I might even use FourSquare then.

Great point Wendy! I have to imagine one of the main reasons coffee shops (Barriques, Starbucks, others) have been one of the first groups of retailers to really embrace foursquare is due to their interest in attracting you mobile worker types. Free WIFI, free refills, coffee punch-cards – these “frills” are the delicious pollen that the coffee flowers use to draw you in like a bee. You can bet for sure that foursquare is just the latest way to tempt you into bringing clients into their space…and hopefully it’s working!

Nate, Just an update. Although I did check in on Barriques on Foursquare day, I also wrote a compliment for one of the pleasant workers who actually greets me by name at the Old Sauk Location. I guess she had a review and they gave her kudos on good service. Next time I will write a better compliment so she gets a raise as well. On second thought – maybe the new initiative for social media should be to find all the great service establishments and write about them. Don’t write bad reviews for the bad ones, just don’t write about them – focus on the good. Wouldn’t that be an uplifting day?
