Opening the Highways to All Mankind

Its not every day that one of the big five automakers comes to Madison WI. Our friends over at Social Media Breakfast Madison have asked and been rewarded with the presence of Scott Monty, Ford’s Global Digital Multimedia Communications Director, coming to Madison on January 18, 2012 at the Monona Terrace. RSVP on Eventbrite – no walk-ins day of.

Sponsors

With the sponsorship of Ford, presenting sponsor Shoutlet, and new kid on the block Engaging Social helping out, the Madison social media professional community as well as  business owners, and people who like a great presentation will be able to attend for free.

Additional supporting sponsors are Lands’ End Business Outfitters with a very cool canvas bag to house other donated SWAG items from local businesses.  A regular contributor to SMB Madison is Suttle Straus who makes a mean decal for your car or business front door.

RSVP

Get in on the fun and education if you are an early riser. Unlike our Madison SMC events that happen at night, SMB Madison gets up at ungodly hours of the morning, supplies hot and steamy coffee and food for your belly.

They do require you to register for tickets for this event, but guess what, its free so humor them and RSVP at Eventbrite. This event will not allow seating for people who just show up at the door due to space limitations.

At the time of this writing, over 200 people have registered and a wait list has been started.  We expect additional seats will be released in the next week so get your name on the list.  Let’s make sure to show Scott Monty how Madison’s business community can fill a room!

If you have questions about the event you can email smbmad at gmail dot com.  Or give them a shout out on Twitter @smbmad

I haven’t known Nate Towne for very long. About as long as the Social Media Club of Madison has been around which makes that almost 3 years. Maybe you know him on Twitter as @Fancy_Lad

He is the kind of guy that has an impact on his surroundings and on people.  He certainly had an impact on me.  I count myself lucky to have met him.  I got to work with him as board members of the Madison SMC  on a number of events  such as the Chris Brogan After Dark Party, the MATC forum, and of course, our social outings.  It’s a loss to Madison and to our club that he has taken a new job back in New England where he hails from. Hey there Social Media Club Peeps!

Chad Schomber - Social Media Club Party Planner

Chad Schomber, the Social Media Club of Madison's new Party Planner

Thought you might like to know that the Social Media Club of Madison has a new board member in charge of Party Planning – Chad Schomber, who is replacing our greatly beloved (and greatly missed!) Jessica Binder. In his new role, Chad will oversee the Social Media Club’s event and meeting committee.

Chad is an award-winning copywriter who is gaining a bit of notoriety for his Super-Short Stories on Twitter. He’s also in the process of writing and developing his first novel that will immerse you into the story through real-time social media experiences.

Get to know Chad on Twitter and by reading his blog.

A regular face at SMC events, we’re super-duper psyched to have Chad…um…on “board,” for lack of a better term. (Hey, he’s the award-winning copywriter, not me!) Chad’s energy, commitment and passion for all-things-social will benefit us all.

So raise a virtual glass and toast our new Party Planner Chad – he’s got one heck of project on his plate as we prepare for our big holiday event this December – details and a date will be announced soon!

Welcome aboard Chad – now get to work! *insert whip-cracking sound effect here*

Greeting Social Media Club members! In honor of the upcoming election on November 2nd, we thought it’d be great to get the word out about MATC’s new Social Media Certificate program – just one of the  many educational opportunities offered by Madison College. As you might have heard the MATC has a referendum on the ballot, but this is a destination for all things social media, not a political mouthpiece – so we’re giving you the scoop on the Social Media Certificate from someone who knows it best – a Social Media Club member who is actually enrolled in the certificate program. Liesel Olson works as a PR-Project Manager at The Creative Company here in Madison – in addition to helping her firm take home numerous PRSA Alchemy Awards at this year’s event, Liesel is the consummate professional we all strive to be and is always looking for professional development opportunities. This is her story. Enjoy!

Liesel Olson blogs for The Creative Company and is also enrolled in MATC's Social Media Certificate program

I, like most who read this blog, subscribe to and read blogs about social media on a daily basis, which is truly the best way to learn about social media – socially!  Eventually, I began to wonder how I could differentiate myself.  My answer?  Accreditation.

When I heard about Madison College’s (MATC) Social Media Certificate, I signed up almost immediately.  Now in the second of four classes, I have found that this is a comprehensive program that helps you understand how social media came to be what it is today, how to harness it (or try), and where it will lead us.  It forms the foundation off of which I can apply what I read in those blogs and strengthen the strategy behind the campaigns on which I work.  I have posted my first blog entry (about my first class) on The Creative Company’s blog – along with a link to one of my homework assignments (no, I haven’t gotten my grade back yet!).  I will be posting along the way, so check back often – I’ll even share my grades!

This week the 2010 BlogWorld & New Media Expo will descend on Las Vegas at the Mandalay Bay. Thousands of industry professionals, bloggers, podcasters and video content creators will spend the weekend learning how to create better content, social network and monitize.

The keynote presentations will include people like Jim Lauderback – CEO of Revision 3, Dick Glover – Funny or Die, and Darren Rowse of ProBlogger. They join names like Adam Corolla, Mark Burnett – Creator of the Survivor TV
series and Penn Jillette of Penn & Teller.

Along with many other names running one hour sessions on blogging, podcasting, streaming and more. Dave Taylor, John Chow, Brian Solis, Cali Lews, Steve Garfield and many more.

And yes. I have a couple sessions myself. I join Mignon Fogerty (Grammar Girl) to talk about Expirable vs. Evergreen content. We look at how you should be planning your social media for longevity.

Right after, I moderate a panel of 4, including Mignon, Steve Garfield, Rob Greenlee (Zune) and Miki Cioffi (Adam Corolla, Jimmy Kimmel). We will look at 3-4 shows and critique them. The idea is to give people ideas of what they do
right and wrong.

On Saturday, I lead a group of people around the Expo floor explaining how to do some live video blogging – What we call “Backchannel” content. I will be doing less talking so people can get more hands on time. We will then take the
content collected and create a montage, which will later be viewed on YouTube.

The Social Media Club will have their Social Media Clubhouse. A place where SMC members will meet with others to talk social media. The VJ’s will interview and report within the house.

The best part is if you cannot go, you can catch some of the action. Watch @blogworld on twitter. You can also catch the Live Stream of BlogWorld. I will also be reporting on it as much as possible over at my site Geekazine (you can
find me on Twitter @geekazine).

To network, learn and report – that is the key takeaway from BlogWorld & New Media Expo. If you are going to Blogworld, check out this great article byChris Brogan on how to prepare for the event.

This weekend will be a great time. I personally am looking to work on monetization and build a business with what I do. I also plan on meeting some great people and building new relationships. All in pushing social media to new
limits.

I have never been accused of being a day late and a dollar short – ever.

Yesterday, I was  setting up tweets to help get the word out about Jeff Pulver coming to Madison for a #140Conf Tweetup in my mobile office, aka my Prius, in the parking lot of the Radisson Hotel on the westside.  I had a sinking feeling as I looked at the time that I was late. OMG!  It was 12:30 pm and The Tweetup began at Noon.  I shut my computer down, buckled it into the seatbelt and deftly planned the cross town drive to The Century House at 3420 University Drive.

Tweet what?

While driving, I was evaluating my path due to the construction on University in this area. As I pulled into The Century House parking lot, I noted it was conveniently located beside Panerra for some fresh coffee and even a quick sandwich before, during or after the event.  I was a little disappointed when I walked in and there was no one there.  I asked,

“Where is the Tweetup with Jeff Pulver  taking place?  Acknowledged with blank stares, I continued.  Am I in the wrong place?  Was the abundant parking too good to be true? Did I have to go to the other location?”

No – I was just there on the wrong day.  “Its on Friday, August 27,” clarified the sales staff.

So I looked at some of the most wonderful leather furniture and wood office desks I have seen. You see they have this “stressless” leather furniture that really helped me relax when I tried it out.  Delightful and it will make our Tweetup today even better knowing that we can stand and look or sit and relax in one of the most designy ( is that a word?) locals in Madison.

Thanks to Jacob (@thecenturyhouse) for hosting this event at Noon to 2 pm at The Century House – Home and Office Store at 3420University . There is plenty of parking at the back of the building if the lunch crowd packs the front.

So what’s this all about?

The #140conf events provide a platform for the worldwide twitter community to: listen, connect, share and engage with each other, while collectively exploring the effects of the emerging real-time internet on business. Its about 140 characters.

According to Jeff Pulvers blog:

The schedule for the events are unique and fast paced. It was Jeff Pulver’s intention to provide a platform for as many people as possible to share their thoughts and engage in conversation with the attending delegates. You will find individual talks set to: 10 minutes; “Featured talks” 15 minutes and the various panel discussions are set for 15 and 20 minutes.

The take aways from this event will provide the attending delegates knowledge, perspectives and insights to the next wave of effects twitter and the real-time internet will have on business.

The Social Media Club of Madison just got word from local social media mixer @martindave that Jeff Pulver, creator of the #140conf will be hosting a Madison tweetup on August 27th as part of the #140conf: Roadtrip across the Midwest. That’s pretty darn nifty!

Details will be available here for those interested parties, should be a good time – hope to see you there! Rumor has it that the Tweetup will be held from noon – 2:00 PM at the Century House on 3420 University Ave. Nice location!

Wear In the World 2 Website

Madison's own Steve Olsen goes on the social media interview of a lifetime!

When I worked at Hiebing, a local ad agency, I was fortunate enough to work with Steve Olsen, who at the time was an account executive. A nice kid, Steve had that go-getter spirit we all love to be around. I knew he’d go on to do great things, but I had no idea what was in store for him. (That being said, he probably didn’t either!)

When Adidas Golf partnered with Yahoo! HotJobs on a social media campaign to search for two candidates who would participate in a head-to-head showdown/globetrotting golf adventure taking them to nine countries on three continents over 50 days, whodathunk a young lad from Wisconsin would make the cut? After more than 1.1 million searches for candidates,  Adidas Golf  selected Steve to participate in its “Wear in the World Adventure 2″ with the winner earning a chance to become the company’s new social media catalyst.

Okay, so the title is a little hokey. But supporting your local Badger isn’t! It’s super cool to see a local Madison resident on the global social networking scene, and when I learned about Steve’s adventure on Facebook,  I couldn’t help but get the word out to our Social Media Club members and allies. Let’s see if we can’t get Steve hired!

Support your local Badger Steve by voting for him online. (Don’t forget to tweet your support on Twitter too – Steve’s Twitter handle is @SteveWITW so help spread the word!) You can also follow Steve’s golf antics via Facebook!

It’s pretty darn cool to see a Badger take the world by storm, even if it is *just* golf. (Kidding!!)

Go get ‘em Steve!
