This week is a very special week for Dane County CASA – we are gearing up for our Second Annual Gingerbread Casas for CASA Event at Hilldale Mall on November 20th, 2010!
Last year, I was the brand new Executive Director of CASA, and had only been on the job about a week, when our Board sprung on me their master plan to construct the World’s Tallest Gingerbread Man in the main atrium of Hilldale Mall. I was a little wary. I had no background in 26-feet-tall men made of real gingerbread. And, my lawyerly sensibilities were making me worry about myriad mishaps that could strike at any time with such a novel and ambitious first-time fundraiser.
However, as I worked on the event last year with our Board, I saw unfolding a wonderful collaborative effort, and I became a believer in the Gingerbread! And, indeed, with the amazing and unique contributions of CASA supporters, we pulled off an amazing feat – we built the World’s Tallest Gingerbread Man, but we also raised money for CASA, raised awareness about CASA’s mission, and hosted an amazing Gingerbread House Decorating contest. If you saw the houses last year, you know that the halls of Hilldale were transformed into a museum of culinary artistry with those amazing gingerbread houses, each with its own theme and distinct materials and style.
This year, we have yet another great event planned – The Second Annual Gingerbread Casas for CASA Event will take place on this coming Saturday, November 20th, at Hilldale Mall. This year, our master gingerbread baker Dave Bowden will once again be hard at work – as I write, he is working with his fellow Market Street Diner/Carl’s Cakes bakers and KSW Construction to build a Walk-Through Gingerbread House (once again, made of real gingerbread – really! You can smell the cloves and nutmeg in Hilldale already!).
We once again have an amazing live gingerbread house decorating contest lined up, and once again, expect many a masterpiece.
The best part is that all of this is to support our cause – Dane County CASA works to provide much-needed advocates to abused and neglected kids who are under the protection of Dane County Courts. I assure you that every day we work to ensure that kids up against tough odds get a chance at a safe, stable home so they can learn and grow. I can’t emphasize how important this work is.
Check the big event out on Facebook (“Gingerbread Casas for CASA”), and visit our website to find out more! We always need more friends and volunteers here at CASA – come join us! We will find a role for you! Not only is the work we do so important, but we have a good time doing it. It’s a win-win! Happy Holidays, everybody — let the games begin!
Mary Beth Collins

Dane County CASA
The Social Media Club of Madison just got word from local social media mixer @martindave that Jeff Pulver, creator of the #140conf will be hosting a Madison tweetup on August 27th as part of the #140conf: Roadtrip across the Midwest. That’s pretty darn nifty!
Details will be available here for those interested parties, should be a good time – hope to see you there! Rumor has it that the Tweetup will be held from noon – 2:00 PM at the Century House on 3420 University Ave. Nice location!
When I worked at Hiebing, a local ad agency, I was fortunate enough to work with Steve Olsen, who at the time was an account executive. A nice kid, Steve had that go-getter spirit we all love to be around. I knew he’d go on to do great things, but I had no idea what was in store for him. (That being said, he probably didn’t either!)
When Adidas Golf partnered with Yahoo! HotJobs on a social media campaign to search for two candidates who would participate in a head-to-head showdown/globetrotting golf adventure taking them to nine countries on three continents over 50 days, whodathunk a young lad from Wisconsin would make the cut? After more than 1.1 million searches for candidates, Adidas Golf selected Steve to participate in its “Wear in the World Adventure 2″ with the winner earning a chance to become the company’s new social media catalyst.
Okay, so the title is a little hokey. But supporting your local Badger isn’t! It’s super cool to see a local Madison resident on the global social networking scene, and when I learned about Steve’s adventure on Facebook, I couldn’t help but get the word out to our Social Media Club members and allies. Let’s see if we can’t get Steve hired!
Support your local Badger Steve by voting for him online. (Don’t forget to tweet your support on Twitter too – Steve’s Twitter handle is @SteveWITW so help spread the word!) You can also follow Steve’s golf antics via Facebook!
It’s pretty darn cool to see a Badger take the world by storm, even if it is *just* golf. (Kidding!!)
Go get ‘em Steve!
