Hopefully you’ve been enjoying the insights of Mary Beth Collins, Executive Director of Dane County CASA, who has been blogging on our site as part of our parternship this year.
Today, her organization will have new “Court Appointed Special Advocates” (CASAs) sworn in by Judge John Albert at the Dane County courthouse. These volunteers have completed an intense 30-hour volunteer training, modeled after the national CASA program, so that they may advocate for children affected by abuse and neglect who are currently under the authority of county courts.
Dane County CASA volunteers may be assigned by the courts to children in protective proceedings to gather information, review records, and make observations relevant to the children’s case, make regular contact with the children and monitor their safety and well-being, testify in court, and generally advocate for the children’s best interests.
CASA volunteers provide reports to judges and work closely with social workers and attorneys to help inform the decision-making process regarding permanent placement and advocate for the children’s safety, permanency, and well-being. Each year,100 children are served and supported by the program.
Dane County CASA will hold it’s next volunteer training in late summer. Contact Mary Beth at marybeth@danecountycasa.org if you are interested in getting involved!
