The Social Media Club of Madison is celebrating its one year anniversary at the same place we kicked off our first year event – the Brocach Irish Pub.
Remember those days back in high school or middle school when you got a surprise valentine from your secret admirer, your Sweetheart? Well, no matter how long ago you were in school, the world has changed through social media. We no longer just have sweethearts – now we have #Tweethearts!
What is a #Tweetheart, you ask? Well, it’s a person who you have connected with on Twitter and you happen to admire – personally or professionally. They might not know it yet, but they will soon – if you come to Social Media Club’s #Tweetheart event, that is!
At this year’s #Tweetheart event, we will:
- be delivering flowers to your #Tweetheart - anonymously if desired
- giving away an awesome gift that you can share with your #Tweetheart (or not)
- holding committee signups so you can get more social media goodness in your life
- be celebrating our one year anniversary with some awesome networking, camaraderie and drinks!
It’s a can’t miss event, so sign up now!
Help us promote this event
What would the Social Media Club be without social media action steps for you to take. Here are a few suggestioins
- If you are going – share with your network on LinkedIn, Twitter and Facebook. Use #tweethearts and #madisonsmc to promote.
- Write a blog post about some recent social media activities you have done and share out event in that blog post.
- If you aren’t attending the event – share the event and just note that you are a “maybe” or “interested”. Why let your network suffer not knowing when you can share the details.
- Know of a community calendar? Add the event in the calendar for us – all the details are at Eventbrite
- Get your flip camera out and interview people you know who are going, post on YouTube, tag it #madisonsmc and #tweetheart and share with your networks
- Make a big red Valentine that you write ” I am taking my #Tweetheart to the Brocach and celebrate with #MadisonSMC. Take a picture of you and your friends with the sign, post on Flickr and Facebook. Share with your network and our Facebook Page. Don’t forget to tag everything.
We have some exciting news about the upcoming #Tweethearts event and couldn’t wait to share with you!
For $1, you will be able to send your #Tweetheart a carnation, thanks to our sponsor @metcalfesmarket!
Contact @lieselolson (lieselolson@gmail.com), @e_humphrey, or @chadschomber if you’d like to make someone’s day! Just tell us how many flowers ($1 each) you want to go to each of your #Tweethearts – you can pay at #tweethearts!
When you arrive at the #Tweethearts event and register, you pay for your flower(s) and it gets delivered! Don’t forget to bring the delivery address with you. Let’s see how happy we can make our #Tweethearts!!

Well, now Chad has done it! Our new party planner has created a signature song to sing for our upcoming event. Badger on a Mission: Steve Olsen’s Global Social Media Interview w/Adidas
July 30, 2010 in Adventure, Movers and Shakers, Uncategorized | Tags: Adidas Golf, facebook, madison, Steve Olsen, twitter, Wear in the world, Wisconsin | by natetowne | Leave a comment
When I worked at Hiebing, a local ad agency, I was fortunate enough to work with Steve Olsen, who at the time was an account executive. A nice kid, Steve had that go-getter spirit we all love to be around. I knew he’d go on to do great things, but I had no idea what was in store for him. (That being said, he probably didn’t either!)
When Adidas Golf partnered with Yahoo! HotJobs on a social media campaign to search for two candidates who would participate in a head-to-head showdown/globetrotting golf adventure taking them to nine countries on three continents over 50 days, whodathunk a young lad from Wisconsin would make the cut? After more than 1.1 million searches for candidates, Adidas Golf selected Steve to participate in its “Wear in the World Adventure 2″ with the winner earning a chance to become the company’s new social media catalyst.
Okay, so the title is a little hokey. But supporting your local Badger isn’t! It’s super cool to see a local Madison resident on the global social networking scene, and when I learned about Steve’s adventure on Facebook, I couldn’t help but get the word out to our Social Media Club members and allies. Let’s see if we can’t get Steve hired!
Support your local Badger Steve by voting for him online. (Don’t forget to tweet your support on Twitter too – Steve’s Twitter handle is @SteveWITW so help spread the word!) You can also follow Steve’s golf antics via Facebook!
It’s pretty darn cool to see a Badger take the world by storm, even if it is *just* golf. (Kidding!!)
Go get ‘em Steve!
My Thoughts and Yours – SMC April 21 Recap – Managing Your Social Media Brand
May 24, 2010 in Event Recap | Tags: Brazen Careerist, Deborah Mitchell, facebook, madison, Nate Towne, Nathan Lustig, SMC, social media, Social Media Club, Steve Schroeder, Wendy soucie, Wisconsin | by Wendy Soucie | 1 comment
We should all know by now that every person and every company has a brand. Whether you like it or not. And whether it’s right or not.
The key is deciding to manage and control your brand. With Web 2.0 managing your online brand and reputation is something that you need to take seriously. This month the Social Media Club of Madison’s program was Managing Your Social Media Brand. We changed up the format of the meeting with a panel session. It was held at the UW Business School building and seemed to attract a few younger generation attendees. I guess I can say that as I think they certainly were half my age! Our moderator for the evening Steve Schroeder, Director of the Business Career Center at the Wisconsin School of Business, UW-Madison.
Nate Lustig (Entrustet /UW-Madison grad)
Nate Towne (PR Manager, Shine Advertising)
Deborah Mitchell (Executive Fellow in the Center for Brand and Product Management, Wisconsin School of Business)
Ryan Paugh (Co-Founder, Director of Community, Brazen Careerist)
My thoughts
The panel of experts shared best practices and personal insight into maintaining a responsible and effective social media brand. The crowd was very engaged by both seasoned veterans and college students alike. The advice, from my perspective, was pretty solid on privacy, cleaning up your image, and the real benefits of using social media and social networking sites to showcase your personal brand
You couldn’t have found a more diverse group to cover the range of experience, from startup/entrepreneur, to academia, and to real world. Some of the interesting questions asked were about profiles, user names and the mixing of social and business on different social media networking sites.
Nate Towne, with his effervescent personality that carries online very well, represents clients in the social space with his PR Manager role. He spoke about his choice of user names, how it represents him but not his clients so he doesn’t use his personal accounts for his work. Nate Lustig spoke about his blogging style and how he keeps his personal blog separate from his company blog perhaps due to his topics. Deborah Mitchell related stories about students and how she might counsel them to adjust their language and picture inclusion on FaceBook. And Ryan Paugh talked about being honest with yourself about goals while blogging for himself and Brazen Careerist.
I liked this presentation and the panel style. Perhaps a student on the panel (moderator?) talking about the view from their side would have added something to the evening. Although two of the panelist were likely in their mid – late twenties, a real student might have challenged the overall message. That being – maybe they do not have to conform to business standards to succeed. Would Facebook or Google ever have started up if those students worked with a corporate mindset?
Your thoughts
I interviewed Nate Lustig after the panel session and had these three tips for personal branding:
Rachel, a UW Madison Student, offered the insights she gained from the meeting:
What’s your personal branding looking like ?

Why I Joined The Social Media Club of Madison
February 1, 2010 in public relations | Tags: brand reputation, facebook, healthcare communications, madison, mercy health system, public relations, social media, twitter | by trishskram | Leave a comment
I’m Trish Skram, public relations professional, news junkie, writer, social media enthusiast and hungry learner. Oh … and I serve as PR/media relations specialist for Mercy Health System based in Janesville.
This is my first post and to be quite frank, I wasn’t sure what to write about. So, I figured a good starting point would be to tell you why I’m here.
I joined Social Media Club of Madison because I want to network. Pretty simple. I love the idea of this community because it offers a place where we can collaborate ideas, thoughts and talk about what’s happening in OUR area … the ever-expansive, ever-changing and ever-growing city of Madison.
So, what do I hope to get out of Social Media Club of Madison? I want the opportunity to build and nurture a network of trusted peers who I can learn from, plain and simple. Other sites do just this, but not exclusively in a demographic area. Resources like Twitter and Facebook can help you find a network, but it’s sometimes tough to build face-to-face relationship. Precisely why I’m excited to be a part of this community.
As Marlena mentioned in the previous post, Social Media Club of Madison members come from a variety of professional backgrounds and range in work experience from students, young professionals to well-seasoned executives, yet we all have a passion for learning and helping others. It’s a great community and we hope to expand our networks. With that said, here’s what you can expect from my blogging contributions:
- Healthcare communications
- Brand reputation and management
- Social media technology and “buzz”
- Young pro advice
- And really, all things PR, social media and communications
I will blog for Social Media Club of Madison twice a month, so stay tuned. We’re still drumming up interest, ideas, members and events. Please leave me a friendly hello, a few ideas and topics you’d like to read about. I’m very open to suggestions, ideas and more importantly, connecting with all of you.
Cheers to a wonderful year ahead!
