Hi, this is Wendy Soucie. I am currently on the board of The Social Media Club of Madison as the 2011 incoming president.  I have decided that the best way to encourage more participation and attendance is to let you know what you are missing at each event, and interview attendees on what they thought.

This is my recap post for the Social Media Club of Madison meeting of 3/23/10 at American Family. I thought that this  first major speaker event was a good companion to the awesome and packed networking gathering we held at the Brocach  Pub.  It really set the bar high for future speakers and good swag.  Speakers included Mark Anderson, Troy Janisch, and James Bond ( yes I spelled that right) of Google.

My thoughts

Our overall theme was video and with Mark as the Master of Ceremonies of the event we got off to a good start.  The agenda included a presentation by Troy of American Family on their efforts with social media and video.  It was likely the first time attendees had a behind the scenes look at American Family’s new social media team.  Troy gave us insight into the strategy, the  process they had for early introduction, working with the legal team, Facebook integrations and apps, and exactly what worked and didn’t. While not many of us have a American Family budget, he pointed out several ways a small and medium sized business could also use the same channels.

One of the videos they showed on teenage driving was pretty shocking and not one of theirs. I might describe it as “overly powerful.”

The best quote from Troy was “Facebook has called American Family the most aggressive company on Facebook.”

Another highlight of the evening was the review and discussion on several submitted videos that showcased everything from a no budget – Flip Video interview,  to a well thought out promotion piece for the University.

Nate Towne and Google provided plenty of very nice giveaways to top the evening off at the American Family facility and then we successfully retired to Pooley’s for refreshments.

Your thoughts

I interviewed a few people after the meeting and will share their opinions about the meeting as well.

I bet you were sorry you weren’t here. Try to make the next Social Media Club of Madison event and sign up to help on a committee.  How else do you think you will be social?
