Any Interest in a chance to win an IPad?

I recently purchased a MacBook Pro after 30 plus years on a PC. The drivers were various, but maybe it was just time for a change. Yes, I am struggling with remembering where to close the application, file structure and for now, I just don’t use IPhoto. But no crashes yet and I have a speedy machine that doesn’t seem to mind that I often have 20 windows open while I work on my diverse social media activities and research. BuildSocial relationships at our April 13th event
During our Holiday event in 2010, the successful #JingleMingle, we shared the event with the Dane Buy Local Group. We have many cross over members and it was a wonderful way to forge new connections AND see familiar faces. One of the people I met during the event was John Locke who is a member of not only Dane Buy Local but Habitat Young Professionals. John thought his group might be interested in learning more about innovative and effective ways to use social media for the support and promotion of he group. We both had such a great time at the joint event the two groups have hammered together a combined event to #BuildSocial relationships! Read the rest of this entry »

The Social Media Club of Madison is celebrating its one year anniversary at the same place we kicked off our first year event – the Brocach Irish Pub.
Remember those days back in high school or middle school when you got a surprise valentine from your secret admirer, your Sweetheart? Well, no matter how long ago you were in school, the world has changed through social media. We no longer just have sweethearts – now we have #Tweethearts!
What is a #Tweetheart, you ask? Well, it’s a person who you have connected with on Twitter and you happen to admire – personally or professionally. They might not know it yet, but they will soon – if you come to Social Media Club’s #Tweetheart event, that is!
At this year’s #Tweetheart event, we will:
- be delivering flowers to your #Tweetheart - anonymously if desired
- giving away an awesome gift that you can share with your #Tweetheart (or not)
- holding committee signups so you can get more social media goodness in your life
- be celebrating our one year anniversary with some awesome networking, camaraderie and drinks!
It’s a can’t miss event, so sign up now!
Help us promote this event
What would the Social Media Club be without social media action steps for you to take. Here are a few suggestioins
- If you are going – share with your network on LinkedIn, Twitter and Facebook. Use #tweethearts and #madisonsmc to promote.
- Write a blog post about some recent social media activities you have done and share out event in that blog post.
- If you aren’t attending the event – share the event and just note that you are a “maybe” or “interested”. Why let your network suffer not knowing when you can share the details.
- Know of a community calendar? Add the event in the calendar for us – all the details are at Eventbrite
- Get your flip camera out and interview people you know who are going, post on YouTube, tag it #madisonsmc and #tweetheart and share with your networks
- Make a big red Valentine that you write ” I am taking my #Tweetheart to the Brocach and celebrate with #MadisonSMC. Take a picture of you and your friends with the sign, post on Flickr and Facebook. Share with your network and our Facebook Page. Don’t forget to tag everything.
We have some exciting news about the upcoming #Tweethearts event and couldn’t wait to share with you!
For $1, you will be able to send your #Tweetheart a carnation, thanks to our sponsor @metcalfesmarket!
Contact @lieselolson (lieselolson@gmail.com), @e_humphrey, or @chadschomber if you’d like to make someone’s day! Just tell us how many flowers ($1 each) you want to go to each of your #Tweethearts – you can pay at #tweethearts!
When you arrive at the #Tweethearts event and register, you pay for your flower(s) and it gets delivered! Don’t forget to bring the delivery address with you. Let’s see how happy we can make our #Tweethearts!!
If you have any questions, let us know! Can’t wait to see you Monday evening!

Badges, Tips, Shouts and Cool Tools on foursquare

Marivic Valencia, our Queen of Fun for Social Media Club, offers the following goodies in followup to our foursquare Pub Crawl
#4sqpc last week in Madison. I did get most of her speech on video, but had to cut some in the editing process to get all the potential mayors in the movie.
Ways to use foursquare badges for businesses without spending 10k/mo on them
- Birthday Badge Treat yourself to another cupcake – that’s 5 birthday shoutouts from you!
- Send 5 birthday shoutouts to friends on foursquare. The shout has to include “Happy Birthday” in the text to count.
Tip: Marivic is pretty sure on the 5th shoutout you actually have to check in to get the badge.
Examples:
On your company’s birthday
On your employee’s birthdays “Happy Birthday to AmFam’s Troy Janisch”
Visually and verbally connect with your customers
Free offer/special if they show that their check-in earned them a badge (explorer, crunked, etc.).
Offer for mayor
a) WHAT IS FOURSCORE?
FourScore is a way for businesses to finally see how their customers’ Foursquare “check-in” behavior compares to their competition — and even their category. We know how competitive it is out there. You can use this data to make more informed decisions about how to attract more customers to your venue in the context of what others are doing.
FourScore is the first of its kind tool for businesses and marketers who wish to understand the impact of consumers’ adoption of location-based services on their business, across the enterprise.
What do check-ins mean? Do I have a lot of check-ins? What is the value of these check-ins? Should I treat my mayors special? Should I allocate resources to location-based marketing? If so, how much? Should I do it evenly across all of my locations? Should I offer my suppliers access? If so what would it be worth?
FourScore begins to answer some of the many, many questions about Location-Based Marketing and is a way for serious marketers to start to understand not only the significance of their location-aware audience, but the size of that audience relative to their competitors. Nationwide. We’ll be evolving this over time, but hey – it’s a start.
FourScore offers two measures of how your Foursquare activity compares to that of your competitors:
COMPETITIVE FOURSCORE:A measurement (index) of Mayorship turnover. If your Competitive FourScore is 600, your venue has 6x the “mayor” turnover of your competition. If your Competitive Fourscore is 0, it means that there is not a mayor of your venue (yet), or there has been no turnover at all.
CHECK-IN FOURSCORE:A measurement (index) of how the volume of check-ins at your venue compares to others in your category. In other words, if your Check-In FourScore is 600, people are checking into your venue 6x as often as your competition.
We’re in beta (who isn’t), so we’ll be adding new features and metrics (and even more location-based services) soon. Stay tuned!
The app, built by mobile payments start-up Venmo, will allow Foursquare users to leave money for their friends as gifts at locations like coffee shops, restaurants, etc. If one of your pals goes to the same coffee shop every morning, for instance, and regularly checks in there on Foursquare, you can use Gifi to leave them money for an espresso along with a little message, and they’ll be informed of it next time they’re there.
The app is free and should be available today, but you need to have accounts with both Foursquare and Venmo to use it.
Gifi should be warmly received at Foursquare, which is counting on third party developers to build applications that will create new uses for location-based check-ins. The more Foursquare-powered apps like this exist, the more chance New York’s most promising tech start-up has for becoming a true platform for location rather than just a niche service. Uses include:
- Hospitals: Leave gifts at hospital for friends/family
- Education: Leave gifts for teachers at nearby coffee shops
- Cause marketers: Leave gifts for people that donate
Result: Tweets such as “flowers waiting for me @meriter, thanks @wendysoucie” OR “flowers from @meriter waiting for me when i went to visit my grandpa, nice touch”
Take time to leave tips
Finally, foursquare, as any other platform, gets better and more useful with its users. So let’s key off of some of the observations coming out of San Francisco, and take time to leave helpful tips for others. These can be ongoing, such as whether or not a place only takes cash but has an ATM, or takes cards but not AmEx, to time-sensitive nuggets you stumble upon, such as daily specials. And remember, while we’re checked in at a venue, we can see what’s going on nearby. So if your company’s offer lines up with the next errand I have planned, then your message was disruptive without being intrusive.
That being said, let’s get our badges on.

Locationary Wants to be the Wikipedia of Location: Tech News «.
Sharing tips and insights on location based tools leading up to our foursquare Pub Crawl on September 29. Its important to know that much of the location based information is incorrect or outdated. You can often hear comments like “Hey it says I am in the middle of the lake” or “it won’t let me check into the Monona Terrace, it says I am still in Milwaukee” if you are standing by someone who is trying to check in somewhere on foursquare, gowalla or other app.
An incentive base product that would encourage business owners and business goers to update a core database like Locationary would have the success of wikipedia in my mind. What do you think?

Jeff Pulver, The Century House and the 140Conf Tweetup

I have never been accused of being a day late and a dollar short – ever.
Yesterday, I was setting up tweets to help get the word out about Jeff Pulver coming to Madison for a #140Conf Tweetup in my mobile office, aka my Prius, in the parking lot of the Radisson Hotel on the westside. I had a sinking feeling as I looked at the time that I was late. OMG! It was 12:30 pm and The Tweetup began at Noon. I shut my computer down, buckled it into the seatbelt and deftly planned the cross town drive to The Century House at 3420 University Drive.
Tweet what?
While driving, I was evaluating my path due to the construction on University in this area. As I pulled into The Century House parking lot, I noted it was conveniently located beside Panerra for some fresh coffee and even a quick sandwich before, during or after the event. I was a little disappointed when I walked in and there was no one there. I asked,
“Where is the Tweetup with Jeff Pulver taking place? Acknowledged with blank stares, I continued. Am I in the wrong place? Was the abundant parking too good to be true? Did I have to go to the other location?”
No – I was just there on the wrong day. “Its on Friday, August 27,” clarified the sales staff.
So I looked at some of the most wonderful leather furniture and wood office desks I have seen. You see they have this “stressless” leather furniture that really helped me relax when I tried it out. Delightful and it will make our Tweetup today even better knowing that we can stand and look or sit and relax in one of the most designy ( is that a word?) locals in Madison.
Thanks to Jacob (@thecenturyhouse) for hosting this event at Noon to 2 pm at The Century House – Home and Office Store at 3420University . There is plenty of parking at the back of the building if the lunch crowd packs the front.
So what’s this all about?
The #140conf events provide a platform for the worldwide twitter community to: listen, connect, share and engage with each other, while collectively exploring the effects of the emerging real-time internet on business. Its about 140 characters.
According to Jeff Pulvers blog:
The schedule for the events are unique and fast paced. It was Jeff Pulver’s intention to provide a platform for as many people as possible to share their thoughts and engage in conversation with the attending delegates. You will find individual talks set to: 10 minutes; “Featured talks” 15 minutes and the various panel discussions are set for 15 and 20 minutes.
The take aways from this event will provide the attending delegates knowledge, perspectives and insights to the next wave of effects twitter and the real-time internet will have on business.

Badger on a Mission: Steve Olsen’s Global Social Media Interview w/Adidas
July 30, 2010 in Adventure, Movers and Shakers, Uncategorized | Tags: Adidas Golf, facebook, madison, Steve Olsen, twitter, Wear in the world, Wisconsin | by natetowne | Leave a comment
When I worked at Hiebing, a local ad agency, I was fortunate enough to work with Steve Olsen, who at the time was an account executive. A nice kid, Steve had that go-getter spirit we all love to be around. I knew he’d go on to do great things, but I had no idea what was in store for him. (That being said, he probably didn’t either!)
When Adidas Golf partnered with Yahoo! HotJobs on a social media campaign to search for two candidates who would participate in a head-to-head showdown/globetrotting golf adventure taking them to nine countries on three continents over 50 days, whodathunk a young lad from Wisconsin would make the cut? After more than 1.1 million searches for candidates, Adidas Golf selected Steve to participate in its “Wear in the World Adventure 2″ with the winner earning a chance to become the company’s new social media catalyst.
Okay, so the title is a little hokey. But supporting your local Badger isn’t! It’s super cool to see a local Madison resident on the global social networking scene, and when I learned about Steve’s adventure on Facebook, I couldn’t help but get the word out to our Social Media Club members and allies. Let’s see if we can’t get Steve hired!
Support your local Badger Steve by voting for him online. (Don’t forget to tweet your support on Twitter too – Steve’s Twitter handle is @SteveWITW so help spread the word!) You can also follow Steve’s golf antics via Facebook!
It’s pretty darn cool to see a Badger take the world by storm, even if it is *just* golf. (Kidding!!)
Go get ‘em Steve!

Barriques Ramps up Social Business in Madison with foursquare Freebies
June 10, 2010 in public relations, Social media tools | Tags: Barriques, foursquare, geolocation applications, Gowalla, madison, Social Media Club of Madison | by natetowne | 4 comments
Today was a rough morning at the office – we’re out of coffee. The horror! I hope this never happens to you, I’m thinking of starting a support group.
But I digress…
I can’t work without my AM java fix, yes I’m weak. So I hoofed it over to Barriques on West Washington for a “Punch in the Face” (literally – it’s my favorite coffee blend) and some beanage and noticed they’ve kicked off a foursquare promotion today. Sweet!
According to the official Barriques website:
Don’t miss out on great Foursquare specials at your favorite Barriques location. Make sure to ‘check in’ every time you visit to be eligible for discounts and freebies.
At this time I’m not sure what these discounts and freebies are, but you can bet your bottom dollar (don’t bet your bottom that’d just be silly) that they involve free coffee or tea, and who doesn’t like that?
Here’s a local business that gets it – so let’s help them be successful in its endeavor today. If you’re looking for coffee, head to Barriques and check in on foursquare – you never know, you might get a free cup o’ Java! Tweet about them today too – they can use the support of our club! (You’ll find them @barriques) Of course I’m hoping we can get them to host a Social Media Club of Madison Tweet-up social in the near future, it’d be the perfect spot for us connected types.
As for me, I’m proud to say Barriques gave me the kick in the petutie I needed to make the switch from Gowalla to foursquare. No looking back! This just goes to prove that geolocation isn’t just for New York City and L.A., it’s everywhere you want to be…and should be.
Now stop reading already, go get some coffee and check in!
