MAC Book Pro and BIG monitor

I recently purchased a MacBook Pro after 30 plus years on a PC. The drivers were various, but maybe it was just time for a change.  Yes, I am struggling with remembering where to close the application, file structure and for now, I just don’t use IPhoto. But no crashes yet and I have a speedy machine that doesn’t seem to mind that I often have 20 windows open while I work on my diverse social media activities and research. BuildSocial relationships at our April 13th event

During our Holiday event in 2010, the successful #JingleMingle, we shared the event with the Dane Buy Local Group. We have many cross over members and it was a wonderful way to forge new connections AND see familiar faces.  One of the people I met during the event was John Locke who is a member of not only Dane Buy Local but Habitat Young Professionals. John thought his group might be interested in learning more about innovative and effective ways to use social media for the support and promotion of he group.  We both had such a great time at the joint event the two groups have hammered together a combined event to #BuildSocial relationships! The Social Media Club of Madison is celebrating its one year anniversary at the same place we kicked off our first year event – the Brocach Irish Pub.Social Media Club of Madison - Tweetheart

What is a #Tweetheart, you ask? Well, it’s a person who you have connected with on Twitter and you happen to admire – personally or professionally.  They might not know it yet, but they will soon – if you come to Social Media Club’s #Tweetheart event, that is!

At this year’s #Tweetheart event, we will:

  • be delivering flowers to your #Tweetheart - anonymously if desired

Help us promote this event

What would the Social Media Club be without social media action steps for you to take. Here are a few suggestioins

  • If you are going – share with your network on LinkedIn, Twitter and Facebook.  Use  #tweethearts and #madisonsmc to promote.
  • Write a blog post about some recent social media activities you have done and share out event in that blog post.
  • If you aren’t attending the event – share the event and just note that you are a “maybe” or “interested”.  Why let your network suffer  not knowing when you can share the details.
  • Know of a community calendar?  Add the event in the calendar for us – all the details are at Eventbrite
  • Get your flip camera out and interview people you know who are going, post on YouTube, tag it #madisonsmc and #tweetheart and share with your networks
  • Make a big red Valentine that you write ” I am taking my #Tweetheart to the Brocach and celebrate with #MadisonSMC.  Take a picture of you and your friends with the sign, post on Flickr and Facebook. Share with your network and our Facebook Page. Don’t forget to tag everything.

Ellen Foley (Madison College) looking for soci...

Ellen Foley, (Madison College) Image by wendysoucie via Flickr

Our next Social Media Club educational effort is well – at an academic facility.  Madison College to be exact. Madison College has started a Social Media Marketing Certificate course this fall.  In speaking with Ellen Foley an educator, administrator, and yes a blogger (@foshowmom), we decided a joint effort for our next meeting was just in time.

I had a great meeting with Madison College (previously Madison Area Technical College) faculty members Steve Noll, Pamela Cremer, Lisa Wilbur to discuss what they were doing with students in the program. We wanted to make sure this meeting was an opportunity to hear about the certificate program, network with current members of Social Media Club and the greater social business community, and hear about how Outrigger3 Madison-based agency has been doing event promotion and outsourcing using social media channels.

RSVP to the event at http://oct2010madisonsmc.eventbrite.com.

The Speakers

John Holcomb, CEO and founder of Outrigger3 is our featured speaker for the event.  Outrigger3

John Holcomb, CEO/Founder Outrigger3

(@outrigger3) is an emerging media company helping organizations understand and effectively leverage the unique opportunities presented to them by new media. John’s expertise is in tailoring and implementing emerging media campaigns and forecasting the next wave of new media opportunities for his clients. Whether it’s connecting with a consumer on a hyper local level or mass collaborating with audiences on a global level, Outrigger3 outfits its clients with the tools, knowledge and strategy necessary to connect with their targets and build sustainable, actionable relationships. Some of John’s work has included setting digital strategy for a national restaurant chain, a global biotech company, a film festival, and a US Senatorial campaign. Some of their local clients include Madison College, State Bank of Cross Plains, Famous Dave’s, Promega, and Porchlight.

We can also expect to hear from Steve Noll, faculty at Madison College about the Social Media Marketing Certificate program in its first semester of existence. Notable, many students will be attending the presentation, likely in a sponge like state, to have as many key takeaways as possible.

Event Promotion

Madison Social Media Club has promoted all of our events using social media tools and word of mouth.  After the Chris Brogan event in June, this author even wrote up what we learned about timing and effort in the 6 weeks we had to promote that event. I personally used what I learned after Chris Brogan graced our fair city of Madison,  as a leap frog event for promoting Disney Institute when they came to Madison in August. Disney Institute is the educational arm of Disney Company and the professional development day long seminar was  a more traditional event that has used only email marketing in the past. Both types of events brought together where traditional marketing, email and social mix, support and amplify the buzz.

I hope to learn a bit more strategy and choice making to apply to an even bigger project management event  coming up in February, Social Media Tools Week, a global virtual event on social media tools, application, and case studies. Madison will have its own Meetup for that event and planning is in the works.

Crowdsourcing

According to Wikipedia:

Crowdsourcing is the act of outsourcing tasks, traditionally performed by an employee or contractor, to a large group of people or community (a crowd), through an open call.

For example, the public may be invited to develop a new technology, carry out a design task (also known as community-based design[1] and distributed participatory design), refine or carry out the steps of an algorithm (see human-based computation), or help capture, systematize or analyze large amounts of data (see also citizen science).

The term has become popular with businesses, authors, and journalists as shorthand for the trend of leveraging the mass collaboration enabled by Web 2.0 technologies to achieve business goals. However, both the term and its underlying business models have attracted controversy and criticisms.

Turkeys in a crowd

Several unique projects will be discussed that used crowdsourcing as part of the strategy for business goal achievement.

One such crowdsourcing effort is www.futureofmadison.org.

The website says:

In a historic effort to stir up “Big Ideas” about the future we’re asking students, leaders, citizens and you to “send” your big ideas to the year 2112 through a futuristic time capsule.

Neighbors and friends of the 12-county Madison area will choose the best ideas for the next century by voting at the Future of Madison website. More than $10,000 in scholarships and other awards will be presented for exceptional ideas. Madison College will tuck all ideas into the 2112 Time Capsule that will be designed by creative friends of the College. UW Credit Union will award $6,000 in scholarships to three “Big Idea” winners.

Please come and join us at this next cooperative event with Madison College and  Social Media Club.

RSVP to the event at http://oct2010madisonsmc.eventbrite.com.

The program starts at 5;30 PM at the Madison College Mitby Theater located at the Truax Campus.  It will be Open parking night so no permit will be required in the ungated areas of the student parking.

group of friends using foursquare

Friends using foursquare

Steve Gasser of Vivid Image, Hutchinson MN,  and I (both Social Media Academy Alumni) recently had the opportunity to speak at the St. Cloud MN AAF Central MN (AKA AdFed) a professional association, this past week.  The meeting of approximately 70 people was held at Creative Memories, an company that has embraced social media as a channel to engage with avid scrap booking fans and customers. While AAF Central MN has had several presentations on social media,  Steve and I were asked to focused on some solid actionable activities for the group.  I talked about integrating LinkedIn and Slideshare for the Business to Business (B2B) markets and Steve talked about tips for integrating Facebook, Twitter and Blogs.

It was great to travel to MN, which always helps me appreciate WI better. The leaves are turning and of course it gave me the opportunity to do a few video blogs in the car.  Steve Gasser and I share a common philosophy and methodology in our approach to social media. We shared stories about the work he is doing with rural business and health care organizations.  His wife is a community manager for Vivid Image clients and it was interesting to hear about the situations she has encountered with customers. Her challenge is in building trust within organizations so she can become the best manger for the social spaces these clients build into their strategy. They have been working with their retail clients on using foursquare in Hutchinson which is about 1 hour plus west of Minneapolis and has a population of about 40K.

Not to miss an opportunity to get my Flip Video in action, I did a few on the spot interviews on the foursquare topic.  With the upcoming foursquare pub crawl, I questioned  a few different folks from St. Cloud on how they were using foursquare.

Cory Hollenhorst, Account Manager,  Meta13, St. Cloud MN

Mike Anderson, Quarterton Productions, St. Cloud MN

Marc Vaillencourt, Host and Executive Producer of The Conversation Hub

I hope you enjoy the interviews and make plans to attend the foursquare Pub Crawl on September 29, starting at Logan’s in downtown Madison.  In the meantime, I am working on how best to use on my Windows-based HTC phone to check in somewhere.

Mark Anderson (American Family Insurance) showing off his TV interview attire

When you want to learn something about social media who do you turn to? When Christine Bellport of NBC Channel 15 in Madison wanted to get to the people in the know about social media and the upcoming Chris Brogan presentation on this subject they called in the ‘A Team’.  That is  Jan Moen, Executive Director of Accelerate Madison, Mark Anderson on the Social Media Team at American Family Insurance (and board member on the Madison SMC) and Wendy Soucie, Co-Manager of the Social Media Breakfast Madison and chair-elect for Madison SMC.

Here is a quick behind the scenes look on June 17, the day of our TV interview. Did you catch it on the 11 am news? Note Christine mentioning she wanted to cover social networking on the morning news program?  Let’s tap into our collective knowledge and get everyone preparing for their own TV interview.

We all love a good party. And what could be better than to leave with a few party favors?

Going to a party put on by the Social Media Club of Madison and leaving with their social media and Wisconsin themed SWAG party items.  Get there early and stay late.

Nate Towne has really ramped up the affiliate partnerships with some especially good SWAG – Stuff We All Get.  I took some time this week to catch Nate in one place and asked him about the goodies he has gathered for the free Brogan After Dark After Party.  By the way, the party is free but you don’t get off that easy.  You do need to RSVP at our Eventbrite page so we can make sure we have enough food morsels and space for Madison when they turn out for CB.
